I'm Starting a Business in My Final Year of College (And Why You Should Too)

I just started building my first business and am still in my last year of college. I encourage you not to wait; do the same!

Last year, I sat through my share of boring lectures about corporate strategy, business development, and revenue optimization. The professors mentioned risk management quite a few times, and this got me thinking: What better time to take risks than now when my biggest financial commitment is my Netflix subscription?

As you might know, I'm 23, living on the cheap, and my most valuable possession is my laptop. I've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. I have no loans, no family expenses, and no commitment to a demanding corporate job I can't leave. I have raw ambition, unlimited potential, and time, which are the most valuable currency in the business world.

And you know what? That's exactly why I decided to build my own business!

I still struggle with some questions: Why are we all fighting for the same internships? Why do we all consider the same entry-level positions? And why do we all choose the same "safe" path of searching for a job at an established business?

What if we've got it all backward?

We all know how Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook from his dorm room, and he didn't wait for the "perfect time" to build it. Neither was Michael Dell when he started assembling computers in his college room. Reddit and Microsoft were all started by college students who didn't wait to graduate and find a job before starting. They made their time right.

And here's a secret for you: Every client booked, every small product delivered, every failed attempt and small win is building something way more valuable than just a business. It's powering up the most substantial CV you could ever build.

Think about it—while others are padding their resumes with fluff achievements and bullet points, I'm learning to build products, sell into various markets, and solve real problems. When the next recruiter asks about my leadership experience, I won't tell her about some classroom project. I'll show them how I built a team, delivered a product, and solved a market problem.

And let's talk for a minute about the job market waiting for us! How many new positions have you found being offered lately? How about job security in 2025? It's not as easy as years and years ago. But a business? That's also my backup plan, my dream of a future empire. It's my insurance policy against economic uncertainty.

So here's my plan: I will start building a digital business, an agency offering marketing infrastructure for small brands. Yes, it's been done before. Yes, there's competition. But I don't need to reinvent the wheel; I'll just make it roll faster and cheaper. Starting lean, starting focused, but serious about scaling this opportunity. It's not just another project for school; it's the foundation of something bigger.

Because here's what I know: Whether this becomes my empire or just an incredible learning experience, I'll already be miles ahead of the competition compared to just sitting in my room, waiting for life to happen.

The time has come for me to stop watching others and start building my own! Who's with me?
